Agentic commerce is real for Shopify merchants in 2026, but still small. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts puts your products into ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI by default for eligible stores, and AI-referred orders are growing fast. Yet for most stores AI still sends a fraction of one percent of visits. The right response is a few hours of product-data work — and a store that converts the visitors AI sends you — not a rebuild.
In one sentence: AI assistants now help shoppers discover your products and send them to your store, where the sale is usually completed — so your job is to be easy for AI to recommend, and easy for the arriving shopper to buy from.
Sources disagree on order value: Shopify reports 14% higher average order value for AI-referred orders than organic search, while Ethercycle's smaller sample found lower order values from AI ($97) than from Google ($131). Some AI visits also arrive without a referrer and are counted as direct traffic, so reported AI volume is a floor.
Yes, in proportion. AI visitors are few but unusually valuable: they arrive with intent, convert well and are mostly new customers. That justifies the product-data basics below. It does not yet justify replatforming, paying for placement, or neglecting the channels that bring most of your revenue today.
An AI-referred shopper has usually just had a conversation: they described what they need, asked follow-up questions and got a shortlist. Then they land on a product page — often a first-time visitor to your brand — and the conversation stops. If the page cannot answer their next question, they go back to the assistant and ask about someone else's product.
That is why conversion on your own store matters more in agentic commerce, not less. A Smart Store such as BOBBI lets any shopper continue in the same way they started: chatting and tapping simple choices, with the relevant products in view, then checking out in your normal Shopify checkout. BOBBI does not publish your products into AI assistants — that is what Agentic Storefronts does. It works on the other side: turning visitors into buyers once they reach your store.

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Meta AI — helps a shopper find products and, in some channels, completes the purchase on their behalf. For merchants it means AI assistants become a new way for shoppers to discover and buy from your store.
Shopify says Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores. You can see and manage which AI channels carry your products in your Shopify admin under Sales channels, then Agentic. Products reach Google channels through Shopify Catalog or the Google and YouTube channel.
Being eligible does not guarantee being recommended. AI assistants favour products with clear descriptive titles, complete data such as category, variants, GTIN and availability, accurate prices and stock, and pages they can read. Vague branded product names and incomplete variant data are the most common reasons products are skipped.
Not inside ChatGPT today. OpenAI retired ChatGPT Instant Checkout in March 2026. According to Shopify, ChatGPT shoppers complete the purchase on your own online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. Google, Microsoft and Meta can offer checkout inside their own apps if you enable it.
It is growing fast from a small base. Shopify reported AI-referred orders up nearly 13x year over year in Q1 2026, but organic search still sends more sessions than all AI platforms combined. In Ethercycle's 2026 study of 10 established Shopify stores, AI assistants drove 0.10% of sessions and 0.12% of revenue.
Not if you want to be recommended. Blocking AI search and user-triggered crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot keeps your pages out of their answers. Check your robots.txt after installing any SEO or bot-blocking app.
